By: Matt Coy

Alec Atwood led the Beresford boys to a 1-4 sweep and a perfect score of 10-points at the Big East Conference cross country meet, held Thursday, October 4 at River Ridge golf course in Garretson.

Flandreau was a distant second in the boys’ race with 43 points, and Sioux Valley placed third with a team score of 54 points. This was the fifth varsity team title for the boys this season.

Rainy and windy weather, and cold temps in the low 40s, forced the cancellation of many area meets. Despite the harsh conditions, the Big East Conference meet was a go, and the kids were ready to compete.

In the girls’ race…

The Beresford team gave Flandreau a run for their money, but were unable to dethrone the defending Big East champions. Flandreau won the meet with a score of 18 points, Beresford was runner-up with 28, and Garretson was third with 32 points.

Atwood set the pace early in the boys’ 5K race as he looked to defend his individual title and the team title for the Watchdogs. The varsity boys executed their race plan, going out relaxed and slow for the first mile, before moving towards the front at the midway point.

With his seventh victory of the season…

Atwood cross the tape in 16:15 to secure the conference title. Nico Sanz Curros was the next Watchdog across the line in 16:50 and a runner-up finish.

Matthew Hoffman and Dallas Davis ran stride-for-stride in the final 600 meters, before Hoffman pulled away for the bronze medal in 17:16. Davis would secure the top-4 sweep with his fourth-place finish of 17:19.

The top 15 medalists in the varsity races also received Big East All-Conference recognition.

In the girls’ race, Anna Atwood battled with Chester’s Cami Streff for much of the race, and the two were neck and neck at the finish line after 20 minutes of racing.

Atwood and Streff would finish with identical times of 20:03, with Streff finishing 2ndoverall and Atwood taking home the bronze medal.

Jayce Fischer was within reach of the front runners the entire race, ending up in 6thplace with a time of 20:33.

Jordyn Fischer had an outstanding race with a 14thplace finish in 21:41, which is also the 10thfastest 5K time in Beresford history.

Katie Knutson held on for a 22ndplace finish in 23:17 to round out the scoring for the Watchdogs.
