Alec Atwood battled with fellow junior Camden Wulf from Lennox, before pulling away from the Oriole runner in the final half-mile of the boy’s varsity race at the River Ridge golf course in Garretson on Tuesday, September 5.
Atwood did his part in the 5K race scoring one team point for the team with his winning time of 16:42, but it was the pack-racing by his teammates that cemented the team title over a strong Lennox team.
The Orioles had two runners behind Atwood with Wulf finishing 2nd and Zach Bultena in 6th place. A pack of Beresford and Lennox runners ran in a tight group at the bottom of the last hill and it was clear the final 600 meters of the race would determine the team title.
Dallas Davis found something leftover in the tank as he would lead the group to line finishing in 9th place in 18:17. Riight behind Dvais was Jake Limmer in 10th place with a time of 18:19. Noah Hinirchs unleashed a great kick in the final 50 meters to pass two Lennox runners at the chute as he finished in 11th place in 18:22.
Hayden Brewers was also in site, finishing 15th in a career best time of 18:41. Trystan Olbertson was the final Beresford runner placing 45th with a time of 20:26.
Beresford edged Lennox 28-31 for their first team championship of the season.
The Beresford girl’s varsity team ran without senior Cait Savey as she rested during the Garrteson race. Anna Atwood would take the reins as the front runner for the girls and she was up to the challenge running a strong race, finishing in 4th place with a time of 20:43.
Katie Knutson was the next Lady Watchdog to cross the line, leading a group of six Beresford runners to the tape in 22:11, which was good enough for 18th place. The girls team ran very close to one another as the #2-#8 runners were separated by less than a minute. Also running for the 4th place girl’s team were: Laura Bogue (22nd, 22:17), Sabrina Swee (24th, 22:22), Gabrielle Engbarth 27th, 22:42, Hannah Ebert (29th, 22:57), and Grace Quartier (31st, 23:07).
Lennox won the girls race with 31 points, Flandreau was 2nd with 53 points, Deubrook placed 3rd with 55 points, and Beresford finished with 60 team points.
Seventh grader Adyson Hansen ran an impressive first 4K JV race, placing 3rd in 19:00. Faith Weiland was right behind her in 8th place with a time of 19:16. Also medaling for the JV girls were Addy Wills (15th, 19:31) and Lilly Traxler (20th, 19:44). Just missing a medal was Danielle Larsen as she finished in 21st place in 19:52. The JV girls placed 3rd as a team.
Caleb Weialnd was the top runner for the JV boy’s squad as he ran his fastest 4K of his career in 16:11, which placed him in 22nd overall. Jerry Chen (27th, 16:36), Gage Lyle (29th, 16:41), and Josh Limmer (31st, 16:51) rounded out the scoring for the 5th place Watchdogs.
